Our Design Process: From Research to Application
17 February 2026 · 6 min read

Every project that goes wrong tends to go wrong for the same reason: decisions were made out of order. Our design process exists to prevent exactly that. At LEGO Design we move through four deliberate stages, Research, Design, Finalise and Application, so that by the time anyone breaks ground or lifts a tool, the hard thinking is already done. This is how we turn an ambitious idea for a beach pool, a garden or an interior into something built with calm rather than chaos. Here is what each stage involves and why we never skip a step.
Stage one: Research
We begin by listening and observing. Before we sketch anything, we want to understand you, how you live, who uses the space, how you move through your day, and the feeling you want the finished place to hold. In parallel we study the site itself: orientation to the sun, prevailing breezes, levels, soil, drainage, sight lines and how the space connects to the rest of the home.
In Abu Dhabi this groundwork matters enormously. The position of afternoon sun decides where shade and water should sit; coastal exposure shapes which materials will survive. By the end of research we hold a clear brief and a deep understanding of the site, the foundation every later decision rests on.
Stage two: Design
Only once we understand the problem do we start designing the answer. This is the creative heart of our design process, where we explore layouts, forms, materials and planting, and shape how light and water and space will work together. We design pools, gardens and interiors as one connected experience rather than separate pieces, so a beach pool flows naturally into the landscape and the landscape flows back into the home.
We share this thinking through plans, references and visuals so you can see and feel the proposal before it exists. Design is iterative by nature; we expect to refine, and we would always rather adjust a drawing than a built wall.

Stage three: Finalise
Finalising is where a beautiful concept becomes a buildable reality. We resolve the details that decide whether a project feels effortless or awkward: exact levels, junctions between materials, drainage falls, lighting positions, planting schedules and specifications. Every surface is confirmed for the Gulf climate, chosen for sun, humidity and salinity rather than appearance alone.
This stage is also where we lock scope and sequence so there are no surprises later. The discipline of finalising fully before building is, in our experience, the single biggest reason a project runs smoothly, a point we make to anyone weighing up how to choose a pool and landscape company.
Stage four: Application
Application is construction, and because the earlier stages were done properly, it is the calmest part of our design process rather than the most fraught. We build to the finalised drawings with close supervision, protecting the quality of every detail through to completion. Levels are checked, finishes are inspected, and planting and lighting are installed as designed, not improvised on site.
- Work follows the finalised drawings, not ad-hoc decisions in the field.
- Each stage is signed off before the next begins.
- Surfaces and details are protected and inspected through to handover.
The result is a finished space that matches what was promised, delivered with the order and care that the planning made possible.
How the stages protect your budget and time
There is a practical reason we hold this line so firmly: a clear sequence is what keeps a project on budget and on schedule. When research and design are thorough and finalising is complete, the cost and timeline are understood before construction starts, so there are few of the mid-build changes that quietly inflate both. Each stage is signed off before the next begins, which means you always know where the project stands and what comes next. Certainty, not just beauty, is what a good process buys you, and in our experience it is what clients value most once they have lived through the alternative.
Why a process beats improvisation
It can be tempting to rush toward construction, but a project built without a process is a series of expensive guesses. Our four stages exist to move risk forward, into drawings and decisions where change is cheap, and out of the build, where change is costly and disruptive. It is the same philosophy that guides our belief in working in harmony with nature: understand deeply first, then act with confidence.
If you have a pool, garden or interior in mind and want it delivered with this kind of certainty, we would love to begin at stage one with you. Start a conversation about your project and let us research, design, finalise and build it in perfect harmony with your home.
